Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien was a Viennese metal workshop founded by Carl Hagenauer in 1898. Under Karl and Franz Hagenauer it became internationally known for modernist sculptures and functional objects in brass, copper, wood and nickel-plated metal. Its designs range from stylized animals and African-inspired figures to bowls, bookends, mirrors and table accessories, typically marked with the workshop’s wHw monogram.
Franz Hagenauer (1906–1986) was an Austrian sculptor and designer and a central figure of the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien. Trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, he developed highly stylized sculptures, busts and functional metal objects in brass, copper and nickel-plated metal. His work ranges from expressive figurative pieces to radically simplified modernist forms.

A beautiful handcrafted standing ashtray / smoking stand with a wonderfully elegant and slender silhouette from the 1970s, marked and stamped, designed and produced by the renowned Werkstätte Hagenauer in Vienna, Austria. This sculptural and minimalist piece features a conical base made of black-finished cast iron, a straight black iron stem, and a round bowl crafted from anodized aluminum in a rich brown/bronze tone. It is topped with a matching anodized aluminum lid in a gold/bronze finish. The ashtray is in good condition, showing only minor signs of age. Marked: WHW Hagenauer Wien Handmade Made in Austria. A truly striking piece. Height: 19.5 inches, diameter: 5 inches.
